5 Ways to Celebrate National Singles Week
Post Date: September 21st, 2010
September 19th to 25th is “Unmarried and Single Americans Week” which we’ve decided to redub National Singles Week so it doesn’t sound so scientific and depressing. What is National Singles Week, you might ask? According to the US Census, it was started by the Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio in the 1980s to “celebrate single life and recognize singles and their contributions to society”.
The good news is you’re not going to be single for long — 1 in 5 committed relationships last year began on an online dating site, so you’re in the right place! But since singles are waiting longer to get married (and for good reason!), why not enjoy being single with the rest of us 96 million still looking for The One? Here at HerWay we’re not only dedicated to helping you find your partner in crime, but we want you to have fun doing it. So, on behalf of all the singles out there, here are some great ways to celebrate National Singles Week all week long!
1) Spend some quality time with yourself
Americans tend to associate the word “alone” with the word “lonely” far too often. We enlist friends to accompany us shopping and golfing and over to watch a movie, which can be fun at times, but why not spend some time with Number One? Taking a long drive, relaxing at a coffee shop, or just turning on some music and tearing into a book by yourself can remind you of the joy of being single. No one to tell you what to do, no one rushing you and telling you to hurry up. Single is just another word for master of your own domain!
2) A technology-free singles night
Draft all your single friends for a long, laughter-filled dinner at an out-of-the-way locale you might not normally choose. Try some type of food you’ve never had before, share some wine, and enjoy each others company. And most of all: tell everyone to turn their phones off and put them away at the table. Shutting off from work and the stresses of life for a few hours with friends can relax and calm you. After all, experiences are more valuable than possessions, and a night out with friends (and without your Blackberry) is an experience more fulfilling than most.
3) Flirt your heart out!
Being single comes with many perks — one of which is that you have the freedom to chat, wink, and flirt with anyone you’d like. Grab some single friends and hit a local watering hole for some innocent (or not so innocent) flirting.
4) A spontaneous trip
It’s nearly the end of the year, and as a hard working single, you deserve a break. Being unattached allows you the benefit of packing a bag at a moments notice, grabbing a friend, and heading out of town for the weekend! Need a relaxing poolside weekend? Palm Springs is your spa destination, and still feels like summer with almost 100 degree temperatures. And if you’re looking to blow off a little more steam, Las Vegas offers all the nightlife, debauchery and blazing hot singletons you could need for a celebratory singles weekend!
5) Go on a date
Remember — just because you’re single doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the fun and excitement of dating. In fact, dating can be much more fun when you drop the expectations and enjoy it for what it essentially is: meeting new people, trying new things, and experiencing the nervous adventure of connecting with another single, whether they’re Mrs. Right or Mr. Right Now.
At HerWay, dating takes a new and exciting twist: allowing women to browse profiles, send winks, and open up a window of opportunity that tells guys she’s interested… so he can make the next move. A week that celebrates the single life is the perfect opportunity to try something new, so log into HerWay today, and while you wait for your next great relationship to happen, don’t miss out on life… you’ll never know who you might meet out there!
